A mixed maritime bag again this week, with the main
news being the kidnap of two Indonesian fishermen off Sabah, Malaysia. Initial
reports were a little cool on the idea of involvement by the Abu Sayyaf Group
(ASG) of terrorists, but this now looks more likely as latest reports suggest
the hostages have been taken to Sulu, a known ASG area.
BIMCO"s Head of Maritime Security, Jakob P. Larsen, has spoken about risk
mitigation in shipping, and the Oil Companies International Marine Forum
(OCIMF) has announced plans to include cyber security questions in its new
Vessel Inspection Questionnaire, in another sign that industry is beginning to
take the cyber threat much more seriously.
In West Africa, minds are beginning to focus on the issues Nigeria faces in clamping
down on maritime crime, with funding and corruption cited by a Nigerian media
In the Indian Ocean Region, the US Navy has once again waved at Iran in the
form of freedom of navigation exercises aimed at reminding the regime that the
waters should be free for all nations to transit.
Finally, in the Med, Pakistan and Egypt have conducted naval exercises of their
own, to boost capability and send a regional message.
