A mixed maritime bag again this week, with the main news being the kidnap of two Indonesian fishermen off Sabah, Malaysia. Initial reports were a little cool on the idea of involvement by the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) of terrorists, but this now looks more likely as latest reports suggest the hostages have been taken to Sulu, a known ASG area.
BIMCO"s Head of Maritime Security, Jakob P. Larsen, has spoken about risk mitigation in shipping, and the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) has announced plans to include cyber security questions in its new Vessel Inspection Questionnaire, in another sign that industry is beginning to take the cyber threat much more seriously.
In West Africa, minds are beginning to focus on the issues Nigeria faces in clamping down on maritime crime, with funding and corruption cited by a Nigerian media outlet.
In the Indian Ocean Region, the US Navy has once again waved at Iran in the form of freedom of navigation exercises aimed at reminding the regime that the waters should be free for all nations to transit.
Finally, in the Med, Pakistan and Egypt have conducted naval exercises of their own, to boost capability and send a regional message.
